Nandyal sannalu (NDLR-8) a suitable paddy variety under late planting and gorru sowings in kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh

Sambha mashuri (BPT - 5204), which is popularly known as Kurnool sona, which is popularly, preferred variety by the farmers, but the variety is highly susceptible to Blast & Brown Plant Hopper. During unfavourable climatic conditions the farmers will get huge losses, which leads to low yields (3.5 – 4.0 t/ha) and high cost of cultivation (Rs. 20,000/ha). The net returns obtained by the farmer are mere Rs. 1000 to 4000 per hectare. There is a necessity to develop a variety suitable for delayed sowings with tolerance to BPH & Blast and with grain & cooking qualities similar to that of BPT-5204 for the tail end areas of K.C Canal, where the crop is grown in area of 45,000 hectares in Kurnool and Kadapa districts.

Role of KVK in popularising the variety NDLR – 8:

Keeping the problem in mind three fine varieities (NDLR – 8, JGL – 1798 & JGL - 384) are tried for three years with the financial assitance of ATMA. The results revealed that NDLR – 8 proved to be better alternative to BPT-5204 with 10 – 15 days early maturity, which escapes terminal moisture stress (under water shortage conditions) and the variety is resistant to BPH & tolerant to Blast with 10 % additional yield. The grain and cooking qualities are similar to BPT – 5204 with consumers preference, it is fetching similar price to that of BPT – 5204. Though the other two varieities are tolerant to BPH & Blast, the cooking quality is not similar to that of BPT – 5204.

The popularise and counter the needs of the farmers, KVK took up seed production at KVK farm and also supplied to the farmers. The variety is being demonstrated through On Farm Trials. The variety gained popularity not only in Kurnool & Kadapa districts, but also in other districts of Rayalaseema, Nellore, Ongole, Guntur, Krishna, Nalagonda and Mahabubnagar. The enquiries about the performance of the variety and indent for seed has come to KVK Utukur from Maharastra and Karnataka.

Case study of NDLR – 8:

In Atmakur sub division of Kurnool district, rice is cultivated as rain fed crop in area of 4000 – 5000 hectares. The crop was grown under gorru sowings initially as rain fed and at later stages converted into irrigated crop. The varieties like RNR – 1446, IR-64 and BPT – 5204 are popular under this situation. Average yields under this farming situation is only 3 – 3.5 tonnes per hectare KVK has introduced NDLR – 8 under this situation in an area of about 50 hectares in G. Veerapuram village of Kothapalli mandal, Kurnool district. The variety has come to harvest along with RNR – 1446 & IR – 64 in 130 – 135 days with an average yield of 5.5 tonne per hectare. A farmer recorded maximum yield of 6.5 t/ha. Majority of the farmers in the village opined that NDLR – 8 has shown tolerance to BPH and Blast compared to locally grown varieties. The farmers of the village and adjacent villages are convinced with the performance of the variety and they are interested to take up in massive scale. This indicates NDLR – 8 is a boon for the farmers, who take up Rice under rain fed gorru sowings and late planting conditions.
