TAG – 24 a promising variety – boon for rabi I.D conditions of Kadapa and Kurnool districts
Groundnut is a major crop of Kadapa and Kurnool districts in an area of about 3.5 lakh hectares. The crop is grown as rain fed and irrigated in Kharif and under I.D conditions in Rabi. The farmers were growing TMV – 2, JL –24 & Polarchi Red under rain fed conditions and JL –24 under rabi I.D conditions. JL-24 is susceptible to pests and diseases. Alternate variety tolerant to pests with bold seeds is required. TAG – 24 is tolerant to Bud necrosis with bold seeds is tried by KVK during Rabi for confectionary purpose in place of JL - 24.
Role of KVK in popularising the variety TAG - 24:
KVK tried TAG –24 through Front Line Demonstrations during kharif 2001 – 02 under rain fed conditions. The yields were not encouraging and the variety fared well, where the crop is given with supplemental irrigation. During 2002-03, 2003-04 & 2004-05, the variety was tried during rabi season under I.D conditions. The yield trends were given below (Table). The performance of TAG –24 during the three years was very good with 23.2 % additional yield over the locally preferred JL-24. KVK supplied the variety for 30 hectares in 30 locations during 3 years under Front Line Demonstrations.
Comparative Yield tends of TAG –24 during Rabi in Kadapa district
Case study of TAG -24: In Govindapalli village of Sirivella mandal, Kurnool district, Groundnut was grown as commercial crop very long back, know the farmers stopped growing the crop due to low yields, severe pest and disease incidence and fear of wild boars. KVK convinced the farmer Sri. K.Nageswarar Reddy to take up the crop under Front Line Demonstrations during rabi 2002 –03 under I.D conditions. The farmer him self and his neighbours were very much pleased by the performance of the variety. TAG –24 recorded 44 Q/ha. A field was conducted in the village; about 50 farmers attended the programme. The farmer shared his experiences with the farmers and scientists. Later a Rythu sadassu was organised in the village with lot of fruitful discussions. The farmer earned about Rs. 53000 per hectare. In the next year(2003 –04 Rabi) about 150 acres of Groundnut aws taken up in the same village. From 2003 on wards he came the seed supplier of TAG –24. From farmer to farmer the seed was very well spread to different districts of Andhra Pradesh. The name of Sri. K. Nageswara Reddy as seed producer of TAG –24 has become popular in the district. Like wise the success was with other farmers of Kadapa district. The Success story of TAG –24 was telecasted through ETV channel. The particulars of variety was given good publicity through print media and many letters and phone calls came to KVK for seed availability. . |
