LRG-41 – a Helicoverpa tolerant Red gram variety
Red gram is being cultivated under rain fed conditions during Kharif in Kadapa & Kurnool districts. The crop is also grown under rabi in small pockets in Kurnool district with supplemental irrigation. The crop is grown both in Red & Black soils in area of about 40,000 hectares. The crop with need based supplemental irrigation yields about 20 – 25 Q/ha. The farmers were growing LRG – 30 and the crop is being severely damaged by Helicoverpa armigera at flowering and pod filling stages. If the pest is not controlled in time leads to huge losses and on the other hand farmers are spending lot of amount on pesticidal sprays. Keeping the above problem in view KVK introduced a new variety LRG – 41, which is tolerant to Helicoverpa from kharif 2003 - 04.
Role of KVK in popularising the variety LR - 41:
KVK organised 20 Front Line Demonstrations along with other management pratices, LRG –41 seed was distributed in an area of 10 hectares in 20 locations of Kadapa and Kurnool districts. The yields and pest tolerance was very good and farmers were much impressed by the performance of the variety. At the end of every season, field days were organised in farmers field to educate and collect the feedback. The KVK gave a wide publicity to the variety through print media. In some of the areas LRG – 41 completely replaced LRG – 30. KVK took up seed production in its farm and 70 Quintals of seed was supplied to the farmers of Kadapa and Kurnool districts. The seed was supplied to NGO (APfmgs), Porumamilla and they distributed the seed to farmers and took up seed production in an area of 250 acres. The Cost of Cultivation was minimised with this variety upto Rs. 1500 – 2000 per hectare with an additional yield of about 1 quintal per acre. The yield trends are given below in the table
LRG – 41 seed available to the farmers through different agencies. During 2005 – 06 the variety was grown in large areas. In some of the places of Rayachoty and Lakkireddypalli sub divisions the farmers are going for Red gram with this variety as alternate crop to Groundnut particularly in rain fed Red soils. |
